From the preliminary press release copy:
WALTHAM, MA The Identity Quality Assurance Association [or Authentrus Incorporated] [an identity industry association led by Authentrus Incorporated] today announced its Authentrus Identity Quality Scale, giving managers a means of judging the quality of the identity credentials of users who have access to their confidential information networks.
The Authentrus Identity Quality Scale rates an organization’s identity credential on a scale of 1 to ___ , based upon _______ factors: type of source documents used at enrollment, number and type of credential factors, qualifications of enrollment officer, role of credential in protecting personal assets instead of just corporate assets, corroboration factors, existence and quality of encryption of keys, location of private key (if any), means of storage of private key (if any), circumstances under which the credential can be revoked, length and enforced entropy of passphrase, password or PIN, biometric technologies used at enrollment, biometric technologies used at time of access, means of credential distribution, type of certification authority, and other factors.
When evaluating each factor, score is assigned to each possible value of the factor. For example, a fingerprint reader on a token such as a usb drive or mobile phone would be rated 4 if the technology used is optical, 6 if capacitive, and 8 if it is thermalectric, given the relative merits of the technologies currently available. That number would be factored with a relative weight with the other elements of the score, using Bayesian methods. The product of all weighted factors is the total score, which represents the relative reliability of the identity credential.
“An ExxonMobil Speedpass token, for example, gets a score of __________ given the fact that it is single factor only and it is sent through the mail to its end user with no face to face enrollment process” notes Wes Kussmaul, spokesman for Authentrus. “That would be inadequate for the treasury operations of a corporation but is just fine for the purchase of a tank of gas” noted Kussmaul.
